American Bison

Bison bison

Meet the largest terrestrial mammal in North America. Though you may often hear the name bison and buffalo interchanged, they’re actually different genera. American buffalo aren’t related to African or Water Buffalo. Surprisingly, the bison’s kinfolk are goats and cows! 🐐🐮

American Bison stand 6ft tall and weigh up to 2000 lbs. They have an excellent sense of smell and hearing but not great eyesight. Nevertheless, don’t try them… they run up to 40 mph. (Ahem, silly Yellowstone visitors - 🙄) Speaking of @yellowstonenps, historic records show that bison have continuously occupied Yellowstone National Park since prehistoric times.

American Bison are currently classified as near threatened, which made the time I spent with them even more special. Listening to stories about the lifestyle of buffalo and how they’re interwoven in the daily lives of indigenous tribes felt like a walk on a spiritual journey. Though I was intimidated by their massive stature, standing on indigenous land and being in the presence of the herd invoked an abundance of gratitude, appreciation and love. 🦬♥️
