The Hollywood Bird
If you have my 2021 “Talk Birdie to Me” calendar, meet your August bird!
Picture it: New York City, 1940. A group of birds were released after being illegally sold as caged birds (promoted as “The Hollywood Finch”). This was the introduction of these native West birds to the East. House Finches, America’s premier backyard bird musical ensemble graces us in song and beauty. The males can have plumage color variations of red, orange and yellow. This alteration is due to pigments (carotenoids) in the foods that they eat during molting. If you live in the lower 48 states in the U.S., you probably already have them in your yard. If not, you should have no problem attracting them with nearly any type of bird seed. Depending on where you live, there are two other similar species that you may find amongst these boisterous beauties, the Purple Finch the and Cassin’s Finch. A group of House Finches is collectively known as a “development”.
